This section has been put together to provide you with a better experience when using your computer, whether browsing the internet or doing work. All of the downloads are free, and most are open source, which means they are free to download and distribute; it also means that they are constantly being updated and improved by the community of programmers that donate their time to them.
- Mozilla Firefox - This is an alternative web browser, it is fully standards compliant, and features tabbed browsing and an in-built pop-up blocker. There are also lots of extensions available for it.
- Opera - Another alternative web browser, with similar features to Firefox but a more polished interface, though not as customisable.
- Open Office - An open-source productivity suite, features a word-processor, spreadsheet, database, presentation maker and drawing package.
- The GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program. An open source graphics package to rival Adobe Photoshop, with lots of features.
- Thunderbird - A free e-mail client from the makers of the Firefox web browser
- Adobe Acrobat Reader - This free download allows you to read .pdf files
- Trillian - An instant messaging programme that can be used to communicate between all the major networks (MSN, AOL, ICQ, Yahoo, IRC etc.)
- IrfanView - A very fast image viewer with some basic editing capabilities.
- Deep Burner - A CD and DVD burning programme
- Webshots - A desktop wallpaper and screensaver programme, which puts a calendar on your screen.

- ZoneAlarm - A firewall, to protect your computer when connected to the internet.
- AVG - Anti-Virus software with regular updates, to keep your computer free from harmful viruses.
- Ad-Aware - A program to scan for and remove spyware and adware, which can seriously harm your computer, and your privacy.
- Spybot - Another spyware and adware remover, these two programs often find things that the other misses.
